Lithium and its isotopes in tourmaline as indicators of the crystallization process in the San Diego County pegmatites, California, USA

In the lithium-cesium-tantalum-type pegmatite dikes of San Diego County, California, USA, tourmaline is the main reservoir for Li, except in the cores and the pockets of the dikes where other Li-bearing minerals also occur. Tourmaline from three subhorizontal dikes was analyzed for bulk Li concentrations and Li isotope ratios. The bottom portion of each dike includes rhythmically layered aplite...

Transmission electron microscopy of muscovite alteration of tourmaline

Partially sericitized tourmaline from a pegmatite was investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). Fine-grained muscovite crystals form extensive narrow veinlets preferentially developed along the {110} and {100} cleavages of tourmaline, indicating that a cleavage-controlled alteration mechanism was dominant. HRTEM images show that tourmaline-muscovite interfaces...

Degradation of methyl blue using Fe-tourmaline as a novel photocatalyst.

This study investigated the photocatalytic activity of tourmaline by itself. Under irradiation of a 13 W, 254 nm UV lamp, 50% of methyl blue disappeared in the presence of 130 mg·L⁻¹ tourmaline. The reaction was inhibited by the addition of ethanol, Cl⁻, SO₄²⁻ and Cu²⁺, and promoted a little by addition of 50 mg/L Mg²⁺, which supports the inference of involvement of •OH radicals. This is the fi...

Tourmaline-bearing Quartz Veins in the Baraboo Quartzite, Wisconsin: Occurrence and Significance of Foitite and “oxy-foitite”

The alkali-deficient tourmaline, foitite [ (Fe2Al)Al6Si6O18(BO3)3(OH)3(OH)], and associated hematite occur in quartz veins that cut the geon 17 Baraboo Quartzite in south-central Wisconsin. The bluish green prismatic crystals of tourmaline are chemically zoned from core to rim, with the cores being very aluminous, highly alkali-deficient and, in one sample, relatively magnesian. Electron-microp...

Quartz-Tourmaline Veins in the Northern Sierra Nevada Area

Tourmaline-bearing quartz veins and replacement deposits, commonly copperand gold-bearing, are found in unusual concentration in northwestern Nevada and adjacent northeastern California in Triassic and Jurassic arc rocks and in the Cretaceous plutons that intrude them. Mines and prospects that exploit the tourmaline-bearing deposits are found in a zone approximately 70 miles long and 50 miles w...
